Modernizing the SEGA Game Gear

SEGA Game Gear was easily the most impressive handheld from the early 1990s, featuring a colour backlit LCD screen and much greater hardware capabilities than its contemporary, the original GameBoy. The Game Gear was a powerhouse, featuring the same hardware as a Master System, but its specifications also turned it into a notorious battery hog as it would only last 3-5 hours using 6 AA batteries. Over the years these consoles have also become notorious for capacitor failures and their fairly primitive LCD screens haven't aged well either.

However, with a full capacitor replacement and a few modern upgrades the SEGA Game Gear becomes a truly amazing system. Our restored and upgraded Game Gear consoles come with a full recap of the motherboard and sound board, a larger laminated 3.5" 640x480 IPS LCD screen, dual rechargeable lithium batteries which double the original battery life even while running at full brightness, a USB C power board for easy use with standard chargers, a brand new shell, and an improved speaker. When updated like this, the Game Gear is even capable of running Master System games at full resolution (adapter or flash cart required), taking full advantage of the new display.
